Frequently Asked Questions - Small Group

Each small group includes sixteen (16) sessions.

It is expected that participants attend all small group sessions. The content of each lesson builds on the content learned the week prior. Missing a lesson will require participants to revisit a lesson that was already covered.

It is understood that unexpected events may occur. If a participant misses a session, they may resume the following week. There are no make-up sessions for small groups.

Each participant will receive a physical copy of all the worksheets needed during small group. Some worksheets will be completed during group, and some will need to be completed prior to the live session(s).

Participants are expected to have their workbooks during each session; this is essential for student engagement.

If a workbook is lost, your small group facilitator can provide a new copy for $10.00.

Persist Education Services uses evidence-based curriculum to ensure students receive high-quality and highly effective tools to improve their learning experiences and achieve academic success. The following curricula are used to address students' needs:

  • The Zones of Regulation (2011), written and created by Leah M. Kuypers, is used to address the social-emotional needs of students. The curriculum is aligned with CASEL's SEL Core Competency Areas: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness.

  • STEP-UP to Better Grades (2018), written and created by Robin S. Zorn, is a curriculum focused on increasing school-success skills in the areas of listening and following directions, organization, paying attention, planning out projects, homework tips, test-taking tips, and different learning styles.

Yes. Small group sessions are available during second semester - January through May.

The curriculum for second semester is identical to first semester (August through December). Students who continue to need support after small group may continue with services through the 1:1 mentoring program.

Additional small group options with an alternative curriculum may become available for second semester depending on the level of need and the number of participants interested.

Frequently Asked Questions - 1:1 Mentoring

Each participant will meet with their mentor for at least one (1) session per week.

Students who choose to participate in small groups will have an additional session each week. Small group participation is an optional activity to increase social-emotional and school success skills.

Students will use Zoom to access weekly "connect" sessions. Students will also be able to send messages to their mentor through My Coaching Office using the following link:

My Coaching Office

Parents may communicate by phone, email, or live through Zoom by appointment only. Parents may request an appointment by sending an email to their student's mentor.

Mentors engage in activities to help develop positive, consistent relationships with their mentee. The activities that the mentor and mentee engage in are developed based on student interest and developmental needs. However, to initiate and enhance the relationship process, activities may include but are not limited to:

  • Learning and developing skills through virtual activities (i.e. learning modules, educational videos/discussion, virtual field trips/scavenger hunts, etc.)
  • Attending in-person activities (i.e. student's extracurricular activities) - parent/guardian attendance required
  • Problem-solving dialogue
  • Conflict resolution
  • Academic-related goal setting

Any student can participate in cycle 1 and cycle 2 for mentoring services. However, each cycle requires a separate registration.

Mentoring services are limited by cycles due to space availability. The service is provided in cycles to increase the number of opportunities available for students to enroll during the school year.
